What is car insurance?

Car insurance will cover your costs if your vehicle is to be damaged in an accident, vandalised, stolen or even catches fire. It is a legal requirement to have car insurance if you drive or keep your car on a public road. The level of cover you will receive from your insurance is dependent on the policy you have chosen, with the lowest type of cover being third party insurance, which offers cover if you injure someone else or damage their car.

Not only is this car insurance price comparison service quick and easy but all of our profits will be donated to cancer charities across the UK.

You could save money on your car insurance whilst helping to make a difference!

What cover will I need?

The best insurance for you is a policy that is not only affordable but also covers you for everything you need – not just picking the cheapest option.

The minimum cover you can have on a car insurance policy is third party cover, this is a compulsory requirement and without it it is illegal to drive. But exactly what you are covered for will be dependent on the type of policy you choose.

Comprehensive car insurance

This is the most extensive cover you can receive this will cover you for the following:

  • Repair or replacement costs if you car is damaged or wrote off
  • If you car is stolen or catches fire
  • Any claims made against you for people, passengers and their property

Each policy will differ with how much cover you will receive so ensure that you check what cover you will receive before purchasing.

Third party, fire and theft

Third party, fire and theft only covers you for any damage to the other people, passengers or their property. Your car will also be covered if it is stolen or damaged in a fire too.

If you are at fault for an accident this insurance policy will not cover any repairs needed to your vehicle, or any of your own medical costs.

Third party only

As previously mentioned, this is the minimum insurance cover you can recieve. It is the lowest level you need to be able to legally drive your car in the UK. you will only be covered for any damages you have caused to other people, passengers, or their property. This therefore means there is no cover for your or your car.

If your car is stolen, damaged, or catches fire you will not be able to claim back the costs meaning you will have to pay for any repairs needed to your vehicle.

How can I save money on my car insurance?

Car insurance can be expensive depending on the car you own, your driving history, and what covers your needs. However there are thing you can do to get a cheaper car insurance:

  1. Pay annually – paying your full years amount in one payment always calculates to be a cheaper alternative to paying monthly this is because you won’t have to pay interest or finance arrangement fee.
  2. Improve your security – Alarms and immobilisers reduce the risk of your car being stolen, therefore, some insurers will offer you a discount if you have these installed.
  3. Choose a less powerful car – If you are looking at insurance policies for a vehicle you are yet to buy, a key point to remember is sporty cars that have a larger engine size tend to cost more money to insure.
  4. Drive less miles – The lower your annual mileage is then the less you will need to pay on your insurance, however do not underestimate your mileage as this can invalidate your insurance.
  5. Telematic policies – a telematic insurance policy uses a black box installed in your car or an app to track your driving, based on your performance you can receive discounts for sensible driving.

Upgrades and additional cover

When comparing possible insurance policies you will soon notice than some come with additional cover, these are optional and will most likely be an additional cost so ensure you only add the ones you need:

  • Breakdown cover

There are three options of breakdown cover you can receive – roadside assistance roadside assistance and recovery, or recovery and home start. In some cases breakdown cover is often cheaper to buy separately from your car insurance so ensure you are getting value for money by comparing it on its own.

  • Courtesy Cover

If your car is ever damaged in an accident, your insurance provider can offer you a courtesy car whilst it’s being repaired.

  • Legal expenses

Legal assistance helps you if you claim from the person responsible if you are involved in an accident and it’s not your fault.

  • No claims discount protection

For every year you drive claim-free you will receive a discount on your car insurance. It’s valuable and has such an impact on the price of your insurance that you can protect it.

  • Windscreen repair and replacement

This will cover any repairs for chips and cracks to your car’s windscreen and sometimes it can be a free extra. It can also mean you are covered if you need to replace your windscreen if it can’t be repaired, but this may be have an excess payment.
